Bridging People and Places Annual College Scholarship for

Students Who Have Faced Serious Illness or Life Crisis

Established in Memory of David J. Vanderzee,

Founder of Willard Mountain Ski Area in Greenwich, NY

Background

The David J. Vanderzee Scholarship was established in 2001 as a tribute to him and a continuation of his belief in young people’s ability to reach their dreams.  Funding for the scholarship came from Ski-A-Thons held at Willard Mountain Ski Area by Hollie Vanderzee, Founder of Bridging People and Places.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a student who has faced a serious illness or serious life crisis.  In Hollie’s words, "Starting a scholarship for youth in Dave's memory seemed to be the appropriate thing to do.  Dave taught thousands of young people to ski over more than three decades.  He was genuinely interested in the youth at the ski area.  Dave had a wonderful way of acknowledging, encouraging, and motivating them to reach for their dreams.  I hope this scholarship will, in some small way, help them attain their dreams.”

Eligibility

This annual scholarship of up to $500 is offered to any young person who has faced a serious illness or serious life crisis.  Applicants must be enrolled in a certified technical or vocational training program, or an undergraduate or graduate program, for the semester following the application.  Previous recipients of the scholarship may apply again, providing they are in good standing with their educational institution.
